Matthew Done (born 22 July 1988) is an English professional footballer who plays as for League One club Rochdale, having rejoined the club from Sheffield United on 3 August 2017.
In his 11-year-long playing career, Done has previously played for Wrexham, Hereford United, Rochdale, Barnsley and Hibernian. After returning to Rochdale, in which he did impressively in his second spell, he signed for Sheffield United in February 2015. In summer 2017 he has rejoined former side Rochdale for a third spell, signing a two-year deal after a mutual termination of his contract at the Blades.
Early life
Born in Oswestry, England, Done attended the Marches School and Technology College in his home town of Oswestry.[3]
Club career
Wrexham
Done started his career at Wrexham through the Centre of Excellence in July 2004[4] and after progressing through the ranks at the club, he was called up to the first team in the wake of the club's financial trouble.[5] His debut came a month after his 17th birthday, as a substitute in a home defeat to Doncaster Rovers.[6] He made his full debut on the last day of the season against Darlington.[7] At the end of the 2005–06 season, in which saw him make six appearances, mostly a handful of substitute appearances, Done was offered a professional contract by the club, in which he signed it.[8]
Then, Done broke into the first team squad at the start of the 2006–07 season and his first goal for Wrexham came against Grimsby Town,[9] and he went on to score against Sheffield Wednesday during a 4–1 win in the League Cup.[10] Although he appeared as unused substitute bench on seven occasions, but suffered an ankle injury,[11] Done finished the 2006–07 season, making thirty–eight appearances and scoring two times in all competitions.
In the 2007–08 season, Done continued to be in the first team regular for the side, though he remained as an unused substitute on several occasions this season, as well as, his own injury concern. He was offered a new contract by Wrexham in May 2008 following the club's relegation to the Football Conference.[12] However, Done reportedly turned down a new contract from Wrexham.[13]
Hereford United
However, he choose to stay in the Football League and signed for League One club Hereford United for an undisclosed fee in June 2008.[14]
Done made his Hereford United debut, starting the whole game, in a 2–1 loss against Leyton Orient in the opening game of the season.[15] He scored his first goal for the club against Swindon Town in the Football League Trophy on 8 October 2008.[16] After losing his first team place on several occasions during the 2008–09 season,[17][18][19] Done managed to regain his first team place and went on to make thirty–nine appearance and scoring once in all competitions despite the club were relegated back to League Two.
In the 2009–10 season, Done started the opening game of the season against Morecambe well when he set up one of the goals, in a 2–2 draw.[20] However, throughout the 2009–10 season, Done struggled in the first team, due to spending the most of the season on the substitute bench, as well as, his own injury concerns.[21] As a result, Done finished the 2009–10 season, making twenty–five appearances in all competitions. At the end of the 2009–10 season, Done was released by the club.[22][23]
Rochdale
Done signed for League One newcomers Rochdale on 31 July 2010 on a six-month contract.[24]
Done made his Rochdale debut on 10 August 2010 in the first round of League Cup, in a 1–0 loss against Barnsley.[25] He scored his first goal for the club in the Football League Trophy against Port Vale on 31 August 2010.[26] It wasn't until on 27 November 2010 when he scored again, in a 1–1 draw against Oldham Athletic.[27] His performance resulted Done signing a contract until the end of the 2010–11 season.[28] Done then scored two goals in two matches between 8 February 2011 and 12 February 2011 against Bristol Rovers and Sheffield Wednesday, which both of these games were a win.[29][30] He later scored two more goals later in the 2010–11 season against Carlisle United[31] and Bournemouth.[32] At the end of the 2010–11 season, Done went on to make thirty–five appearances and scoring five times in all competitions.
On 16 May 2011 it was announced Matt had signed a new contract until the end of the 2011–12 season.[33]
Barnsley
Just a month after signing a new contract with Rochdale, Done signed for Championship club Barnsley on 21 June 2011, along with Scott Wiseman, signing a two–year contract.[34][35]
Done made his Barnsley debut in the first round of the League Cup on 9 August 2011, where he played 27 minutes, in a 2–0 loss against Morecambe.[36] Two weeks later, on 20 August 2011, he scored his first goal for the club, in a 2–1 win over Reading.[37] However, he suffered injuries around September.[38][39] After returning to the first team against Bristol City on 29 October 2011,[40] he appeared a handful of first team appearances and scored again on 26 December 2011, in a 3–1 loss against Blackpool.[41] Done went on to score two more goals later in the season against Derby County[42] and Portsmouth.[43] Despite suffering from another injury,[44] Done played regularly during the 2011–12 season, making thirty–three appearances and scoring four times in all competitions.
In the 2012–13 season, Done made his first appearance of the season against his former club, Rochdale, in the first round of League Cup, playing 120 minutes, in a 4–3 win.[45] However, Done suffered a knee injury early in the 2012–13 season.[46][47] Barnsley then changed manager and new tactics meant that Done was surplus to their requirements.[46] Up until leaving the club in January, Done went on to make fourteen appearances in his second season for Barnsley.
On 31 January 2013, Done signed for Scottish Premier League club Hibernian on loan until the end of the 2012–13 season.[48] Done scored his first goal for the "Hibees" on 3 March, in a 4–2 victory against Kilmarnock in the 2012–13 Scottish Cup.[49] Barnsley announced on 9 May that Done will leave the club at the end of his contract.[50]
Return to Rochdale
Done re-signed for Rochdale on a one-year contract on 8 July 2013.[51] Upon joining the club, Done was given a number sixteen shirt ahead of the new season.[52]
Done made his second debut for the club, coming on as a second-half substitute, in a 3–0 win over Hartlepool United in the opening game of the season.[53] In a match against Wycombe Wanderers on 28 September 2013, he set up two of the three goals, in a 3–2 win.[54] Despite suffering setback of injuries and suspension,[55][56] Done played 38 times in Dale's promotion winning season, as a result he signed a new two-year contract on 27 May 2014.[57]
In the 2014–15 season, Done scored a hat-trick in a 5–2 win over Crewe Alexandra on 19 August 2014.[58] For his performance, Done was named Football League's Team of the Week.[59] He impressed once again on 6 September 2014 when he scored, as well as, providing two assists, in a 4–0 win over Crawley Town.[60] Done went on to score regularly throughout 2014, including another hat–trick against Aldershot Town in the second round replay of FA Cup.[61] In a match against Doncaster Rovers on 22 November 2014, he scored but was sent–off in the second half for a foul on James Coppinger, in a 3–1 win for Rochdale and after the match, it was unsuccessful via appeal.[62][63] By the first half of the 2014–15 season, Done went on to make thirty appearance and scoring ten times in all competitions.
Following his move to Sheffield United, Done said he enjoyed his time at Rochdale, stating that he loved playing every minutes for the side and it left him emotional as a result of leaving the club.[64] Manager Keith Hill admitted his departure benefited for Rochdale, due to "great business" made.[65]
Sheffield United
On 2 February 2015, Matt Done signed a two-and-a-half-year-deal with Sheffield United for an undisclosed fee.[66]
On 10 February 2015, Done scored on his Blades debut in a 4–1 home victory over Colchester United.[67] On 14 February 2015 in his second match for United, Done scored a brace away at Bristol City in a 3–1 victory against the league leaders.[68] Done then went on a scoring spree when he scored against Notts County,[69] Peterborough United,[70] Fleetwood Town[71] and Doncaster Rovers.[72] In his first half season at Sheffield United, Done went on to make fourteen appearance and scoring seven times in all competitions.
In the 2015–16 season, Done, however, injured his collarbone in the club's pre-season tour and was sidelined for the start of the season.[73] After returning to the training in late-September,[74] Done scored on his first appearance of the 2015–16 season, in a 2–1 loss against Port Vale on 3 October 2015.[75] He scored again two weeks later on 17 October 2015, in a 1–1 draw against Oldham Athletic.[76] In the club's second meeting against Oldham Athletic on 5 December 2015 in the second round of FA Cup, Done scored again, in a 1–0 win.[77] After recovering from a hamstring injury, in which he sustained a hamstring injury against Bradford City on 28 December 2015,[78] Done scored twice on his return on 12 January 2016, in a 3–3 draw against Wigan Athletic.[79] It wasn't until on 5 March 2016 when Done scored his fifth goal of the season, in a 2–2 draw against Fleetwood Town.[80] Since returning to the first team in early-October, Done regained his first team place at Sheffield United and went on to make thirty-five appearances and scoring seven times in all competitions.[81]
Ahead of the 2016–17 season, Done switched number shirts from 14 to 11 following the departure of Jose Baxter, who released at the end of the 2015–16 season.[82] Under the new management of Chris Wilder, Done began to play as a striker, having impressed the club's management.[83] Done went on to score two goals in two matches between 10 September 2016 and 17 September 2016 against Wimbledon[84] and Peterborough United.[85] As a result, it was reported by The Star that Done was among few players to be offered a new contract by Wilder.[86] However, as the 2016–17 season, Done's first team opportunities soon became limited, due to his lack of his goal-scoring form, as well as, Wilder preference of striker Billy Sharp.[87][88] As a result, Done was placed on the substitute bench for the rest of the season.[89] It wasn't until on 14 April 2017 when he scored his third goal of the season, in a 3–0 win over Port Vale.[90] At the end of the 2016–17 season, which saw Sheffield United promoted to Championship after six seasons in League One, Done went on to make thirty-five appearances and scoring three times in all competitions.
Third spell at Rochdale
After his mutual termination of his contract with Sheffield United at the end of the 2016–2017 season,[91] Rochdale A.F.C. announced Done had signed a two-year deal, keeping at the club until the summer of 2019.[92] Done announced that he was "excited to be back", after speaking to the club.[92] Done also said "it is a Club he holds very close to his heart, and he is looking forward to working under Keith Hill again".[91]
He was offered a new contract by Rochdale at the end of the 2018–19 season.[93] In June 2019 he signed a new two-year contract with the club.[94]
