Career

Dharmawan started his career by founding Krakatau in 1984, with his bandmates Pra Budi Dharma and Donny Suhendra. In 1986, the band has changed its formation in addition of Trie Utami, Indra Lesmana and Gilang Ramadhan. They released their eponymous album in which became success including the title track "Gemilang" written by Dharmawan and filmmaker Mira Lesmana.[2] Until 1992, they released all of their albums, like the eponymous debut and second albums, released in 1987 and 1988 respectively, Kembali Satu (1990) and Let There be Life (1992). In 1991, coinciding with the band's breakup, he released his eponymous debut studio album, in which he sung the title track "Di Antara Harapan" (Between the Wishes) featuring Irma Basuki, and "Sia-Sia Ku Menunggu" (I'm So Futile to Wait).[3]

A year after, Dharmawan and artist Ags Arya Dipayana wrote the Islamic song "Dengan Menyebut Nama Allah" (In the Name of Allah) sung by Novia Kolopaking in which being popular today[4] and has been used in numerous films and television programs.[5] In 1995, he founded his own chamber orchestra, the Dwiki Dharmawan Orchestra.[6] The first series that Dharmawan scored to make use of orchestra was Harkat Wanita (A Girl's Trait) in 1996.[7] He also re-established the Farabi Music Education Center in same year, formerly owned by Indra Lesmana.[8]

On 4 August 2006, it was reported that Dharmawan and his orchestra would held an inaugural concert, Menembus Batas (Beyond the Limit), featuring popular singers and Islamic acts, like Melly Goeslaw, Opick, Sam Bimbo, Rachel Amanda, his wife Ita Purnamasari, and Seurieus.[9]

In early 2015, Dharmawan signed a contract with MoonJune Records to release his first international studio album and sixth overall, So Far So Close. Initially titled Passion, Love, Life, this album was recorded in the United States and recruited several musicians including Jerry Goodman, Jimmy Haslip, Chad Wackerman and Dewa Budjana.[10] The Indonesian Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy appointed him to wrote the jingles "Pesona Indonesia" and "Wonderful Indonesia" as Indonesia's tourism branding to go international.[11][12]
