Shivapuri Baba
Shivapuri Baba (Template:Lang-ne) was a Hindu saint. His birth name was Jayanthan Nambudiripad and is also known by the name of Swami Govindanath Bharati. He died on 28 January 1963 at Dhrubsthali, near Pashupatinath Temple in Nepal, and is claimed to have lived for 137 years, having reportedly been born in 1826 in Kerala, a region in southern India.[1][2][3][4] If true, this would make him the oldest known person in history.
Biography
He was orphaned at the age of 9 and raised by his grandfather Achyutam. Achyutam himself was an astrologer in the court of Tipu Sultan and had a business of jewelery and spices. When Achyutam retired, he went to a forest for performing sadhana. Shivapuri Baba went with Achyutam and stayed until Achyutam died. After the death of his grand father, Shivapuri Baba went to Narmada forest for meditation. He then went around the world mostly on foot to spread wisdom.[5]
He visited more than 50 countries and met with many prominent peoples of that time including Queen Victoria, Leo Tolstoy and Albert Einstein. He went to various countries in Asia, Europe and America.[6]
Shivapuri baba came to Nepal and spent the later stage of his life by meditating in the forest of Shivpuri in Kathmandu, Nepal, from where he derived his name.[1] He lived in the forest for about 40 years.[7] He had already visited Nepal with his grandfather in 1846 where he had seen the soldiers of Kot massacre.
