The Battle of Valenciennes was part of the Hundred Days Offensive at the end of World War I. Occurring on 1 and 2 November 1918, it resulted in the capture of Valenciennes from the Germans by Canadian and British forces. A vivid account of this battle, from the Maresches section of the eleven-mile front, is provided by Private A S Bullock in his wartime memoir.[1] Sergeant Hugh Cairns, was awarded the Victoria Cross for conspicuous bravery during the fighting.[2]
