Production
Shyam Kumar had approached music composer Anirudh Ravichander hoping to cast him in the lead role for the film in late 2013. After listening to the script and liking the concept, Anirudh turned down the offer on making his acting debut and agreed to compose the film's music. The director then cast newcomer Geethan Britto, Arjunan and Swaminathan to play significant roles in the film, noting that the title "Aakko" is slang for the term "Aarva Kolaaru", which translates into "enthusiastic youngster". Anirudh revealed that he accepted to compose the music to test his star status in the market. In a film where all the other actors are newcomers, Anirudh as the only known star, revealed that he considered it as an "acid test" for himself.[1]
The film's first look was released to the media on 1 January 2014 with a series of posters featuring Anirudh released.[2][3] After progressing slowly throughout 2014, a promotional song "Enakenna Yaarum Illaye" was released in February 2015, with the success of the song prompting the producers to plan a promotional video featuring Anirudh and Amy Jackson during July 2015.[4] Production troubles meant that Aakko, along with producer Deepan Boopathy's other film Mellisai, was delayed for several years.[5]
