Plainfield Academy for the Arts and Advanced Studies (PAAAS) is a magnet six-year public middle school / high school specializing in visual and performing arts that serves students in seventh through twelfth grades from Plainfield, in Union County, New Jersey, United States. The school is part of the Plainfield Public School District, one of New Jersey's 31 former Abbott districts.[3] Opened in September 2009, the school requires that students are residents of the city who have been enrolled in the district for a minimum of a year.[4]
As of the 2017-2018 school year, the school had an enrollment of 412 students and 38.0 classroom teachers (on an FTE basis), for a student–teacher ratio of 15:1. There were 218 students (54.6% of enrollment) eligible for free lunch and 41 (10.3% of students) eligible for reduced-cost lunch.[2] May 1, 2019– Plainfield Academy for the Arts and Advanced Studies (PAAAS) was ranked among the best high schools in the United States, according to an announcement released by U.S. News and World Report. PAAAS ranked 147 among New Jersey’s 551 Secondary Schools and ranked within the top 40% in the nation.
Students and alumni
- Teenage jazz-and-gospel vocalist Alexis Morrast, as a high-school student at the Plainfield Academy for the Arts and Advanced Studies, won first place in vocals in 2017 at Showtime at the Apollo. The New Jersey Jazz Society has compared her to a "young Ella Fitzgerald."[5][6]
