Perera
Perera is a common surname in Sri Lanka. Perera is also found in the U.S. state of Louisiana. Louisianians and other Americans bearing this surname largely originate from Spanish and Canarian immigrants to the United States in the 18th century. The name was introduced in Sri Lanka by the Portuguese during the period of Portuguese Ceylon, and it derives from the common Portuguese surname Pereira (meaning pear tree). Perera is also a Spanish name. There are other variants in the Iberian Peninsula: Perer (Catalan), Perero, Pereros (Extremadura, Salamanca and Valladolid), Pereyra, Pereyras, Das Pereiras, Paraira (Portuguese), Pereire, Pereyre (Pyrenees), Pereiro, Pereiros (Galician).
