In December 2006, the Sri Lanka Army (SLA) launched multi-pronged attacks in an attempt to capture territory in Vaharai and the Trincomalee District held by the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE).[1]
Timeline
The SLA's attack on Vaharai began on the morning of 4 December 2006, and was met immediately with stiff resistance from the LTTE. In the ensuing battle, 40 Sri Lankan soldiers were killed and more than 75 were seriously wounded.[citation needed] The LTTE later claimed that only four of its fighters were killed.[citation needed]
Five days later on 9 December 2006, the SLA attacked Eachilampatru from their bases in Kallar and Mahindapura in the Trincomalee District. Again, the SLA moved out early in the morning and advanced a half a kilometer into LTTE territory, before they were surrounded and attacked by the LTTE.[citation needed] More than 30 soldiers were reportedly killed and more than 100 were wounded; two officers were among the dead. The LTTE claimed they had no losses.[citation needed]
