The game received "favorable" reviews according to the review aggregation website Metacritic.[1] In Japan, where the game was ported for release on October 12, 2006, Famitsu gave it a score of 29 out of 40.[4]
Jon M. Gibson of Maxim gave the game all five stars, saying, "Aside from delivering that butt-numbing intensity of being on a crotch rocket for far too long, this Xbox 360 exclusive brings everything to the table—a full roster of official 2006 bikes, 17 extreme street courses (including the harrowing Monterey coastal highway), and 16-player Xbox Live play. Tack on photo-slick high-def graphics, and your girlfriend already is seeming less real. Yeah, she's gone. Deal."[15] Charles Herold of The New York Times gave it a very favorable review, saying, "I have a very low frustration tolerance, but in spite of my string of infuriating crashes and last-place finishes, MotoGP kept me playing, partly because I was drawn in by the game’s exhilarating sense of high velocity, and partly because every once in a while I would hit a turn just right and realize that if I could figure out how I did that, I could win a race."[16] Jason Hill of The Sydney Morning Herald gave it four stars out of five and said, "Battling 15 online riders is absolutely thrilling, but beginners will need plenty of practice, as most will find it difficult just staying on the track."[14] However, the author of Detroit Free Press gave it two stars out of four, choosing Tourist Trophy over the game, but stating that "if you own an Xbox 360 and have been craving some cycling action, MotoGP is where it's at."[1][13]
