Toni Šunjić (Serbo-Croatian pronunciation: [tǒni ʃûːɲitɕ]; born 15 December 1988) is a Bosnian professional footballer who plays as a centre back for Russian Premier League club Dynamo Moscow and the Bosnia and Herzegovina national team.
Šunjić started his professional career at Zrinjski Mostar, who loaned him to Kortrijk in 2010. In 2012, he joined Zorya Luhansk. Two years later, he moved to Kuban Krasnodar. The following year, Šunjić was transferred to VfB Stuttgart, who sent him on loan to Palermo in 2017. Later that year, he signed with Dynamo Moscow.
A former youth international for Bosnia and Herzegovina, Šunjić made his senior international debut in 2012, earning 40 caps since. He represented the nation at their first major tournament, the 2014 FIFA World Cup.
Club career
Early career
Šunjić came through youth academy of his hometown club Zrinjski Mostar.[3] He made his professional debut in UEFA Europa League qualifier against Partizan on 2 August 2007 at the age of 18.[4] On 3 August 2008, he scored his first professional goal against Borac Banja Luka.[5]
In August 2010, Šunjić was sent on a season-long loan to Belgian outfit Kortrijk.[6]
In February 2012, he joined Ukrainian club Zorya Luhansk.[7]
On 9 July 2014, he moved to Russian team Kuban Krasnodar.[8]
VfB Stuttgart
On 27 August 2015, Šunjić was transferred to German side VfB Stuttgart for an undisclosed fee.[9] He scored on his official debut for the club, in a narrow loss away to Hertha BSC on 12 September.[10]
In spite of VfB Stuttgart's relegation to 2. Bundesliga in May 2016, Šunjić decided to stay at the club.[11] However, in January 2017, he was loaned to Italian team Palermo until the end of season.[12]
Dynamo Moscow
In June 2017, Šunjić signed a two-year contract with Dynamo Moscow.[13] He made his competitive debut for the team in a draw against city rivals Spartak Moscow on 18 July.[14] On 3 November, he scored his first goal for Dynamo Moscow, in an away game against Ural.[15]
On 24 June 2019, Šunjić extended his contract until June 2021, with an option for another year.[16]
International career
Šunjić was a member of Bosnia and Herzegovina under-21 team for several years.[17]
In August 2012, he received his first senior call-up, for friendly game against Wales,[18] and debuted in that game on 17 August.[19]
In June 2014, Šunjić was named in Bosnia and Herzegovina's squad for 2014 FIFA World Cup, country's first major tournament.[20] He made his competition debut against Nigeria on 22 June.[21]
On 31 August 2017, in 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifier against Cyprus, Šunjić scored his first senior international goal.[22]
