Avi Koki Schafer (born 28 January 1998) is a Japanese professional basketball player who currently plays for the Shiga Lakestars of the B. League and plays for US college team Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets in the NCAA Division I category.[2][3][4][5] He also holds US citizenship.[6][7]

Biography

Schafer was born in Suita, Osaka, Japan, to Douglas and Sayuki Schafer.[8] He is Jewish.[9] In high school he played for Brewster Academy in his senior year in 2016-17, as the team went 33-0 and won the national prep school championship and the NEPSAC class AAA title.[8]

He averaged 4.9 points and 4.5 rebounds for Japan in the 2016 FIBA Asia U18 Championship.[8] Schafer played for Japan in the 2017 FIBA U19 World Cup, averaging 5.0 points and 4.9 rebounds while hitting 57.1 percent of his shots from the floor.[8] He also represented Japan at the 2018 Asian Games.[8] Schafer was also a member of the Japanese team at the 2019 William Jones Cup.[8] Schafer was named in Japanese squad for the 2019 FIBA Basketball World Cup.[8]
