Kaanal Neer (transl. Mirage) is a 1961 Indian Tamil-language drama film written and directed by P. S. Ramakrishna Rao. The film stars A. Nageswara Rao and P. Bhanumathi in the lead. An adaptation of the novel Badi Didi by Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay, it was simultaneously filmed in Telugu as Batasari.

Soundtrack

The soundtrack was composed by Master Venu. The lyrics were written by Kannadasan and Ku. Ma. Balasubramaniam. The playback singers are P. B. Srinivas, Jikki, P. Suseela & K. Jamuna Rani. The song Manamennum Maaligai Meedhu was released only on the record (not included in the film).[2]

Release and reception

Kaanal Neer was released on 21 July 1961 and was released by Gemini Studios.[3] The following week, The Indian Express said, "The standout feature of Kaanal Neer is the fascinating photography of young Venkat, particularly in the climax. In other technical respects, the film maintains a good standard."[4] In 2013, film historian Randor Guy said the film would be "Remembered for the excellent performances of the lead pair and the story depicting the lifestyle of landed gentry".[1]
