Controversies

On 19 June 2001, Princess Margarita of Bourbon-Parma married the entrepreneur Edwin Karel Willem de Roy van Zuydewijn. De Roy van Zuydewijn was however not trusted by the Dutch Royal Family, and the marriage was therefore not attended by its senior members. In 2003, a series of incidents had become known as the Margarita-affair. In the media Margarita and her husband accused the Dutch Royal House and the Dutch secret service of obstructing the affairs of Fincentives, the company of de Roy van Zuydewijn. They also said that their telephone conversations had been secretly telephone tapped. In so doing they appointed Frits Kemp, Jurriën Pen, Peter Nicolai to defend them against the Dutch state. However, in 2008 it was allegedly reported that Princess Margarita of Bourbon-Parma had refused to pay them. When asked, Kemp said;

"When a client asks for assistance, you explore whether it is necessary to do the case pro bono. The princess was living in a French chateau, wore expensive jewelry, arrived by plane to Amsterdam and stayed in a hotel. So it was safe to assume that the bills will be undoubtedly paid."
