Veltrusy (Czech pronunciation: [ˈvɛltrusɪ]; German: Weltrus) is a small town in the Central Bohemian Region of the Czech Republic. It is situated 25 km north of Prague, and it has about 2,200 inhabitants.
A château Veltrusy Mansion, which is surrounded by a large forest park, borders the town. The château is open to the public for visits.
Sights
Veltrusy Mansion
An important work of high Baroque from the first half of the 18th century, designed by architect Giovanni Battista Alliprandi. The chateau (originally a mere summer house, later significantly expanded) forms an oval core, which is radially adjacent to the lower wings, arranged in the shape of the letter X. On the north side adjoins the court of honor, which is closed by allegorical statues of twelve months and four seasons. The chateau is surrounded by a large romantic park.
In 2002, the castle complex in Veltrusy was severely damaged by the flood. Until 2015 it was completely renovated. The Veltrusy natural monument with the occurrence of brown stonefish and stag beetle was declared in the vicinity of the castle.
