Marie and her husband John

Marie de Bourbon (1428-1448), was a French noblewoman and a member of the House of Bourbon. She was a Duchess of Lorraine by marriage, and the only duchess consort of the Valois-Anjou reign in Lorranine.

Life

Early life

Marie was born in 1428 before her father Charles became a Duke. She was probably named after her paternal grandmother Marie, Duchess of Auvergne, her parents were Charles I, Duke of Bourbon and Agnes of Burgundy making her a granddaughter too John the Fearless and niece too Philip the Good both Dukes of Burgundy and enemies and allies to her father.[1][2]

Marriage and becoming Duchess

Her marriage contract was signed around April 1437 and legally she was married to John II, Duke of Lorraine however the actual ceremony probably took place around 1444 when she was much older and would be able to consummate the marriage.[3] She became Duchess of Lorraine on 28 February 1453 on her husband's ascension. Though her husband did take mistresses and had many illegitimate children she and her husband had a good relationship and had five children though many didn't survive infancy:

  1. Isabelle (b. 1445), d. young
  2. René (b. 1446), d. young
  3. Marie (b. 1447), d. young
  4. Jean (d. 1471),
  5. Nicholas (1448–1473)

Death

Marie died Giving birth to her last and only surviving child Nicholas, she died on July 7, 1448, aged 21 and was buried at Meurthe-et-Moselle Lorraine, France.[4]
