Jay Xiong (born 1983)[1] is an American politician and member of the Minnesota House of Representatives. A member of the Minnesota Democratic–Farmer–Labor Party (DFL), he represents District 67B in Saint Paul. Xiong was appointed Vice Chair of the House Military and Veterans Affairs Policy & Finance Committee, serving on five legislative committees: Labor; Jobs & Economic Development Policy & Finance; Judiciary & Civil Law Policy & Finance; Legacy; and Military & Veterans Affairs Policy & Finance. He is also a founding member of the legislative caucus Minnesota Asian Pacific (MAP) and a member of the DFL Climate Action Caucus and the People of Color & Indigenous (POCI) Caucus. Xiong was also appointed to the Legislative Commission on Metropolitan Government.[2]
Early life, education, and career
Xiong attended Saint Paul Public Schools and graduated from St. Olaf College.[3]
Xiong is a co-founder of the Asian American Organizing Project (AAOP) and Progressive Hmong American Organizers (PHAO).[3]
Minnesota House of Representatives
Xiong was elected to the Minnesota House of Representatives in 2018, to represent House District 67B, St. Paul's lower East side.[4] He replaces Sheldon Johnson, who retired after serving 18 years.[5] Xiong received the Democratic-Farmer-Labor endorsement after three rounds of balloting, leading by a wide margin each time against Shoua Yang, John Slade and Take Action MN's endorsed candidate Grant Stevensen.[5] He is the first person of color to hold the seat in the majority-minority district.[6]
Personal life
Xiong resides in the Battle Creek neighborhood in Saint Paul, Minnesota.[3]
