The Dominican Summer League is a branch of affiliated Minor League Baseball which is played in the Dominican Republic. The league was founded in 1985. After the demise of the Venezuelan Summer League after the 2015 season, it is the only Latin America-based rookie league.[1]
The 2019 72-game season (64 games for the Boca Chica South) starts June 1 and ends August 24 with the playoffs starting on August 26.
The league will be played with forty-five teams in six divisions. With the exception of the cooperative team formed by the Brewers and Indians, each team is affiliated with a different major league franchise with fourteen organizations fielding two teams: the Cardinals, Cubs, Diamondbacks, Dodgers, Mets, Orioles, Phillies, Pirates, Rangers, Rays, Red Sox, Rockies, Royals and Tigers.
The six division winners advance to the playoffs. The two division champions with the best winning percentages receive byes to the semifinals.
The start of the 2020 season was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic before ultimately being cancelled on June 30.[2][3]
