Dylan Michael Sage (born 24 January 1992) is a South African rugby union player for the Template:Rut Bulls in Super Rugby, the Template:Rut Blue Bulls in the Currie Cup and the Template:Rut Blue Bulls XV in the Rugby Challenge.[1] He normally plays as a winger.
He was a member of the South African Sevens team that won a bronze medal at the 2016 Summer Olympics.
Rugby career
Western Province / UCT Ikey Tigers
Sage didn't follow the traditional pathway by representing Template:Rut Western Province at any high school provincial competitions such as the Craven Week, but he did join their academy after finishing school. He was a member of the Template:Rut Western Province U21 teams that played in the Under-21 Provincial Championships in 2012 and 2013, but made just a single appearance in 2012.
In 2013, he was a member of the Template:Rut UCT Ikey Tigers side that participated in the 2013 Varsity Cup competition, making three appearances in a disappointing campaign for UCT as they finished in 7th position in the competition.
Force
Sage was one of a number of South Africans that moved to Perth prior to the 2014 season to join the Template:Rut Force and he was included in their Wider Training Group for the 2014 Super Rugby season.[2] However, he failed to make any appearances at Super Rugby level, but did play in the 2014 Pacific Rugby Cup with the Western Force A side[3] and also played club rugby for Associates in the Premier Grade competition.
Return to South Africa
After one season in Perth, Sage returned to South Africa. He again represented the Template:Rut UCT Ikey Tigers in the Varsity Cup competition in 2015, starting all eight of their matches and scoring two tries as UCT reached the semi-finals of the competition before losing to eventual champions Template:Rut UFS Shimlas.
South Africa Sevens
In late 2015, Sage was contracted by the South African Rugby Union to join the South Africa Sevens team.[4] He was named as a member of extended training squad for the side prepared as they for 2016 Summer Olympics[5] He was called in as injury cover for the 2015 South Africa Sevens[6] and subsequently included in the final squad for the event.[7]
2016 Summer Olympics
Sage was included in a 12-man squad for the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro.[8] He was named as a substitute for their first match in Group B of the competition against Spain, with South Africa winning the match 24–0.[9][10]
Personal life
Sage is the grandson of Doug Hopwood, a rugby player that represented the South Africa national rugby union team in 22 test matches between 1961 and 1965. His younger brother Jarryd is also a professional rugby union player.[11]
