Farnam Jahanian is an Iranian-born American computer scientist and academic. He serves as the 10th president of Carnegie Mellon University.
Early life
Farnam Jahanian was born in Iran.[1] He emigrated to the United States in 1977 after completing high school. Jahanian received a Bachelor of Science degree in computer science from the University of Texas at San Antonio in 1982.[2] He earned a master's degree in 1987 and a PhD in computer science in 1989 from the University of Texas at Austin.[3]
Career
Jahanian began his career at the Thomas J. Watson Research Center.[3] In 1993, he joined the department of computer science and engineering at the University of Michigan, and was later promoted as the Edward S. Davidson collegiate professor.[3] He was also the department chair from 2007 to 2011.[3] At the same time, he was the co-founder and chairman of Arbor Networks from 2001 to 2010.[3]
Jahanian was the head of the National Science Foundation Directorate for Computer and Information Science and Engineering from 2011 to 2014.[3] He was the vice president for research from 2014 to 2015, then provost and chief academic officer of Carnegie Mellon University from 2015 to 2017.[3] Since July 1, 2017, he has served as its president, succeeding Subra Suresh, first as interim president[3][4] and later, since March 8, 2018, as president.[5][2]
Jahanian was named a "great immigrant" by the Carnegie Corporation of New York in 2016.[6]
One of the most cited papers of Jahanian is "Safety analysis of timing properties in real-time systems".[7]
Personal life
Jahanian has a wife, Teresa (known as "Tris"), and three children.[3]
