"Recuerdo" (English: "Memory") is a song by Puerto Rican singer Ricky Martin released as the only promotional single from his first extended play, Pausa (2020) on July 23, 2020.[2] The track features Mexican singer Carla Morrison. Billboard picked the song as one of the Best Female/Male Latin Collaborations of 2020 and one of the most beautiful ballads released that year.[3]

Critical reception

Griselda Flores from Billboard gave the song a positive review, saying "Perhaps one of the most beautiful ballads released this year (2020), the heart-wrenching lyrics in this emotional track call for an introspection of the mind and soul."[1]

Also Rolling Stone praised the song, both Martin and Morrison's vocals and the lyrics, saying "The two singers have complementary vocal styles: Morrison’s is light and lilting, while Martin prefers a creamier, more forceful approach. Morrison kicks things off, then Martin turns up the heat. The beat stays unwaveringly skeletal as the vocal fireworks get increasingly ornate. The whole thing seems expertly designed for a performance at a future awards show, probably with a full choir — a cavernous space where onstage drama can heighten the emotion of the lyrics."[4]

Music video

Directed by the Puerto Rican Carlos Pérez, the video was made in compliance with the physical distance measures, and this time, Ricky Martin worked from the city of Los Angeles, in California, while Carla Morrison did the same from the French capital, Paris.[5][6]

Live performances

Ricky Martin and Carla Morrison performed the song on The Ellen DeGeneres Show on June 23, 2020.[7]

They also performed it in a virtual event, Can't Cancel Pride: Helping LGBTQ+ People in Need, to raise visibility and funds for LGBTQ+ communities.[8][9]

Later that year, they performed "Recuerdo" at the Latin Grammy Awards on November 19, 2020, where Martin also performed his solo song, "Tiburones".[10] Their performance was ranked as one of the best performances of that night.[11]

In an interview, Morrison spoke about her Latin Grammy performance alongside Ricky Martin: "It means a lot because I’m from Tecate. And Tecate’s a small town and I would have never in my life dreamt even about being a un lado de Ricky, not even standing-wise, like, ‘Hey.’ So to be there singing a song that we wrote together and that we collaborated on that’s on his album is, to me, the most beautiful message I can give to anybody that wants to dream big."[10]
