Safet Zhulali (11 March 1944 – 12 April 2002) was the Minister of Defence of Albania from 1992 to 1997. Zhulali was present for the signing of an historic memorandum of agreement between the United States of America and Albania in 1993, the first agreement between the United States and a former Communist country in Europe.[1] Zhulali resigned from office in 1997 following the collapse of the government of Albania. On 14 March 1997 Zhulali fled to Italy with his wife and daughter.[2] Zhulali was later charged with crimes against humanity for his role during the crisis and spent a few weeks in jail.[3]

Personal life

Zhulali has three daughters.[2] He died in his home in Tirana, Albania on 13 October 2002.[3]
