The Adidas Brazuca is the official match ball of the 2014 FIFA World Cup which will be held in Brazil.[1] It will be made by the company Adidas, a FIFA Partner and FIFA World Cup Official Match Ball supplier since 1970.[1] This is the first FIFA World Cup ball named by fans.

Naming

The name of the ball was revealed on Sunday 2 September 2012. It was selected by a public vote organised by the Local Organising Committee and Adidas, with over one million Brazilian football fans voting. The name Brazuca was chosen with 77.8% of the vote.[2] Two other voting options were given: Bossa Nova (14.6% of the vote) and Carnavalesca (7.6% of the vote).[2][3]

According to FIFA, "the informal term “brazuca” (a contraction of Brazilian and Bazuca, Portuguese for "bazooka") is used by Brazilians to describe national pride in the Brazilian way of life", and "mirroring their approach to football, it symbolises emotion, pride and goodwill to all".[1] The term is also used as slang for "Brazilian" and became well-known abroad due to the Brazilian diaspora.

Technical Aspects

Adidas' marketing literature claims:

  • The Brazuca ball has six polyurethane panels that are bonded to keep the ball the same weight and roundness in even the thickest of rain.
  • The never-before-seen panel shape revolutionizes the game by producing faster flight speed and maintaining true roundness.
  • The bladder of the Brazuca ball is made of latex and provides the desired rebound.
  • The ball is textured and feels more like the adidas’ Finale 13, the official UEFA Champions League ball, than the adidas Jabulani used in South Africa four years ago.
  • The adidas Brazuca ball, in a bold white/night blue/multicolor colorway befitting Brazil, is the most colorful ever for a FIFA World Cup™ [4]

The Brazuca ball has been stated to be more aerodynamic than the Jabulani ball.[5]

Unveiling

Adidas unveiled the Brazuca at a launch event on 3 December 2013, two days ahead of the traditional unveiling of the World Cup match ball at the draw of the group stages of the World Cup Final. The launch event took place in Rio de Janeiro at Parque Lage and featured a 3D light projection, which revealed the Brazuca to everyone in attendance.[6][7][8]

Free ball promotion for every child born on 3 December 2013

Every child born in Brazil on 3 December 2013 can receive a free ball. According to Adidas "the giveaway is part of a marketing campaign based on the notion that every Brazilian is born with a soccer ball by its feet." There are approximately 8200 children born in Brazil per day according to the Brazilian Ministry of Health.[9][10]

However, in order to receive a "free ball", the child's parents must visit a store in one of 12 host cities within four days, with a birth certificate. Because of Brazil's size it is possible that many people may not be aware of the promotion, especially from forest villages in Amazonia, or may not have an opportunity to visit a host city within four days. This action may be an attempt to counter the criticism and widespread protest against taxpayer funding for football stadiums and events in a country with poorly funded education and social services.[11][12][13][14][15][16][17]

Price of ball

The match ball's price is approximately $160, with miniball and replica versions starting at $13. Sales of all versions of the ball is estimated to be worth $650 million for Adidas. [18]

Adidas' partnership with FIFA for the years 2007 to 2014 will cost Adidas $215 million in cash and $136 million in sports gear. [19]
