Ahed (or Ahd) Tamimi (Arabic: عهد التميمي, born 2001) is a Palestinian teenager from the village of Nabi Salih. The daughter of Bassem al-Tamimi, she has been documented in protests and confrontations since 2012.[1][2][3] In December 2017, at age 16, she was arrested by Israeli authorities in a night raid, a few days after she had protested and slapped an Israeli officer that the Tamimi family claim had trespassing, half an hour after her 14 year old cousin was shot with a rubber bullet during an incident at the Tamini property.

Early age protests

In August 2012, at age 11, she was photographed attempting to stop the arrest of her mother, and crying. She subsequently met with President of the Palestinian National Authority Mahmoud Abbas who commended her for her courage.[4][5][6]

In November 2012 she was filed berating and cursing Israeli soldiers. It was recorded on video.[7][8][9][10] The following week her family said she was hurt by rubber bullets and tear gas in a revenge attack.[11]

In December 2012 she was awarded the Hanzala Award for Courage in Turkey by the Başakşehir municipality for challenging Israeli soldiers who arrested her brother,[12][13][14][15][16][15] she subsequently met and ate breakfast with Turkish prime minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan.[17][18][19]

On 28 August 2015 she was filmed with other family members confronting an armed and masked Israeli soldier who was attempting to arrest her 12 year old brother for stone throwing. Tamimi hit the soldier and bit his hand, in a video that became viral.[20][21]

On 26 September 2017, she participated in a conference on the role of women in the Palestinian popular resistance which was held in the European parliament.[22][23]

December 2017 protest and arrest

On December 15 in Nabi Salih, Ahed’s 14-year-old cousin Mohammed Fadl al-Tamimi was shot in the face at close range with a rubber-coated steel bullet during a clash with Israeli soldiers at the Tamini home. Subsequently, he was left in coma to remove the bullet from his head. Half an hour after the shooting, two Israeli soldiers stood in front of the family's home, allegedy trespassing according to the Tamimi family.[24][25] Ahed and a young friend approached the soldiers. A video exists of this confrontation, showing Ahed slapping a soldier.

On the night of December 19, Israeli forces raided the Tamimi's house and arrested Ahed. The house was ransacked and recording materials were taken. One day later, when her mother Nariman and her cousin Nour went to visit her in jail, they were arrested too.[26][27][28][29][30][31]

The response by the soldiers was a matter of debate in Israeli society over the appropriateness of not responding to a "provocation" and whether the "restraint" was a sign of strength or fear.[32]
