Altibase is a multinational Korean software corporation headquartered in Seoul, South Korea. The company develops, sells and supports Relational Database Management Systems. The company was founded in 1999 and now has offices in Seoul, South Korea, Greater New York City, Palo Alto, California, Beijing, China, and Tokyo, Japan. Altibase focuses on high-intensity transactional processing[1] through RAM (Random Access Memory), complementing its disk-resident database in a single-database solution.[2]
History
Altibase began as a South Korean government-sponsored research initiative in the early to mid-1990s.[3]
In 1999, Altibase was founded and began specializing in in-memory computing technology.[3]
In 2003, Altibase entered the Chinese Main Memory Database Management System market.[4] Less than a year later, they began working with Chinese Telecommunications providers, such as China Unicom, for billing systems.[5]
According to Gartner in its “Who's Who for In-Memory Databases 2014,” Altibase has over550 enterprise customers and its U.S. offices are expanding along with its U.S. customer base.[1]
Corporate Structure
Altibase Corporation is privately owned, with its U.S. headquarters located in the Greater New York City area and the Asian headquarters in Seoul, South Korea. It operates a branch office in Palo Alto, California, which opened in November 2010.[6]
Altibase also has corporate offices in China, Singapore, and Japan,[7] with over 35 global partners in Asia, South America, North America, and Europe.[8]
Revenue and Market Share
According to Markets and Markets research, Altibase is a major vendor in the in-memory computing market, with over 500 customers and thousands of installations globally.[9][10]
In South Korea, Altibase occupies 80% of the in-memory database market in all sectors,[11] including a 90% market share in the securities field.[12] Gartner notes that, “While successful in Asian markets, Altibase has yet to establish brand awareness and penetration beyond this region.”[10]
Clients
Altibase's global clients in the telecommunications, financial services, manufacturing, and utilitiessectors include Bloomberg, LG U+, E*TRADE, HP, UAT Inc., SK Telecom, KT Corporation (formerly Korea Telecom), Hyundai Securities, Samsung Electronics, Shinhan Bank, Woori Bank, The South Korean Ministry of Defense, G-Market, and Chung-Ang University.[13][14]
Altibase users in Japan include FX Prime, a foreign exchange services company, and Retela Crea Securities.[15][16]
In China, the three major telecommunications companies, (China Mobile), China Unicom, and China Telecom, utilize Altibase HDB in 29 of 31 Chinese provinces.[6]
General Features
- Horizontal and vertical scalability on commodity platforms
- Non-stop service architecture
- Real time ACID compliance
- Compatible with all standard interfaces and programming languages (Java, C, Support for SQL standards (SQL-92,SQL:1999, partial 2003)
- Support for database connectivity standards (ODBC, JDBC .NET Provider, OLE DB, CLI)
- Record-level lock
- LOBs
- DB Links[17][18][19][20][21]
Advanced Features
- Unified Engine
Altibase HDB’s unified engine allows for the use of an in-memory and on-disk database solution under a single solution.
Altibase markets this as a “hybrid” database solution. This garners a significant advantage over a bundled solution because it omits the need for an abstraction layer for disparate database systems to communicate. According to Gartner, “references gave this company high marks for overall performance of its operational DBMS, as well as for support, professional services, and ease of use.”
- Replication
Altibase HDB’s built-in replication functionality maintains an up-to-date backup on an active server. In the event the server is unexpectedly terminated, Altibase HDB immediately resumes service from an identical database on an alternate server so as to provide uninterruptible service. In addition, Altibase HDB’s replication option utilizes a shared-nothing architecture, which provides significant speed and stability gains over shared disk architectures.
Altibase supports two modes of replication: Asynchronous and Synchronous.
- Load Balancing
In a replicated Altibase HDB database environment, user transactions can be divided into two or more groups. Each group of transactions is executed on a corresponding server, and the changes on one server are reflected on the other servers automatically. This allows for increased performance while retaining data consistency.
- Out-Place MVCC
Memory table-spaces in Altibase are capable of utilizing out-place MVCC. This contrasts from the in-place MVCC used traditionally by disk-based relational databases such as Oracle.
Out-place MVCC creates a new version of the original record on UPDATEs, and the existing record points to this new version via a newly-created reference pointer. The new record also includes a reference pointer back to the original record, resulting in a significant performance gain, as it does not need to make a copy from the undo segment. However, this comes at the expense of increased memory usage.
- Spatial Support
Altibase HDB supports the use of advanced spatial data types for representing geometric objects such as points, lines and polygons as well as numerous functions and features for working with these data types.[17] [18] [19] [20] [22]

Altibase XDB
Altibase XDB is a traditional relational database that has fast data processing speeds in main-memory. It comes with high-availability, replication, and scalability features.[23] Altibase XDB comes with three interfaces that include Direct Access Mode, Direct Access API Mode as well as conventional client/server protocols such as TCP/IP and IPC for more complex database operations.[24] Gartner's “Who's Who for In-Memory DBMSs 2014” indicates, “Altibase XDB supports full ACID properties, standard connectivity interfaces such as JDBC and ODBC [fully supported] as well as interoperability.”[10][23]
Altibase HDB
Altibase HDB is a hybrid DBMS with Hybrid Architecture that combines an in-memory database with a conventional disk-resident database.[25] Altibase HDB features include SQL 99 standards compliance, high-availability, replication, real-time ACID compliance, spatial, vertical and horizontal scalability, and compatibility with standard interfaces and programming languages such as ODBC, JDBC, OLE DB, .Net, Java, C/C++, and Precompiler.[23]
According to Gartner, “Altibase HBD has a broad use case applicability. In addition to applying its technology to unique billing scenarios in telecom, as well as real-time flaw detection in manufacturing scenarios, customers cite their use of HBD for analytics and storage of text and rich media content.”[10][26]
Altibase CEP
Altibase CEP is a Windows-based data caching software for use in real-time complex event processing applications. This product was formerly known as DSM (Altibase Data Stream).[27] This product was formerly known as DSM ("Altibase Data Stream").[12]
