There is nothing in the text of the Book of Mormon that suggests windows were transparent. They could have been openings that were covered with some material, including wood, that could be opened to let in light. This material could be dashed to pieces. Or, having openings (windows) for light could simply have been viewed as a weakness in the building of the ships that would introduce structural problems. undo
