Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora is an upcoming open world action-adventure game based on the Avatar film series developed by Massive Entertainment and published by Ubisoft.[1] The game is scheduled to release for PlayStation 5, Windows, and Xbox Series X/S on December 7, 2023.[2]

Premise

Played in a first-person perspective, players take control of a Na'vi orphan raised and trained as a soldier by the Resources Development Administration (RDA), before being put into suspended animation and waking up fifteen years later in an abandoned facility. The player must embark on a journey across the Western Frontier, a never-before-seen region of Pandora, discovering their origins and organizing the local Na'vi tribes to fight back against the RDA as they attempt to exploit the natural resources of the Western Frontier.[3] The game’s story is said to be partially tied to the films, while remaining standalone.[4]

The game will also support 2-player cooperative multiplayer.[4]

Development

The game was announced in March 2017 when Massive announced that their next major title would be based on James Cameron's Avatar.[5] In a 2021 investor call, it was revealed that the game was tentatively set to release in the 2022–2023 fiscal year (April 2022 to March 2023).[6] The game was titled Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora with a trailer at E3 2021 and announced for a release in 2022.[7] The game, which will tell a standalone story in the Avatar universe,[3] will contain "some elements that will pay off when Avatar 3 comes out" and future films in the series could use elements from the game.[8]

The game was delayed in July 2022 from its initial 2022 release window to the 2023–2024 fiscal year (April 2023 to March 2024).[9] During the Ubisoft Forward June 2023 video presentation, a release date of December 7, 2023 was revealed.[10]
