The Azerbaijani Grand Prix (Azerbaijani: Azərbaycan Qrand Prisi) is a planned Formula One race. The first race is expected to take place in the autumn of 2015 at the Baku Street Circuit, a street circuit in Baku, the capital of Azerbaijan.[1][2][3]
History
Origin
The idea of a Grand Prix in Azerbaijan was first put forward in 2014, when Bernie Ecclestone named Baku as a potential host for the sport.[4] The race was announced in May of the same year, with Ecclestone describing the race as a replacement for Korean Grand Prix, and giving 2015 as the event's start date.[5][6] The deal to host a Grand Prix in Baku was brokered by former Renault F1 team principal Flavio Briatore, who proposed such an idea to president of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev.[7]
The race in Baku is expected to bring Formula One around £24m ($40.7 million) every year.[7]
Circuit
The race is set to take place on a circuit around the streets of Baku.[8][9][10]
