Background

Aziz Mohammad Bhai was born in 1962 to Mohammad Bhai and Khatija Mohammad Bhai, émigrés to Bangladesh from Gujarat, India and is of Gujarati descent.[1] He was actively engaged in the management of a steel producer for more than three decades and has been an innovator in a local pharmaceutical manufacturing industry with Ambee Pharmaceuticals.[1] He was involved with several major films produced under his film production company, Ambee Films. Controversy

He was first arrested during the tenure of Hussain Muhammad Ershad as president. The Aga Khan, Prince Karim Aga Khan reportedly himself came to Bangladesh secure his release.[6]

Murder allegations

In 1997, he was alleged to be involved in the alleged murder of the actor Salman Shah. Police had filed a case of suicide, but the family objected to it and lodged a murder case.[2] A Rezvi Ahmed was arrested from the house of Salman Shah's mother, reportedly named Aziz Mohammad Bhai and Salman Shah's wife Samira, of ordering the hit.[7][3] Bhai denied the charges, but he was barred from entering India and his passport was impounded.[7] Rezvi Ahmed recanted his confession.[3]

In 1999, he was accused of involvement in the death of actor, Sohel Chowdhury.[8][9]

Drug charges

In 2007, he was charged for manufacturing yaba tablets. His nephew, Amyn Huda, was sentenced to prison in 2013 in these crimes.[4]
