The Battle of Chungju was a battle during the Japanese Invasion of Korea. The Japanese First Division took Chungju and along with the Second Division headed towards Hanseong.[2]
Background
Katō Kiyomasa's Second Division met up with Konishi Yukinaga's First Division at Mungyeong and arrived near Chungju on 5 June. Katō camped south of the town while Konishi's First Division attacked.[1]
Sin Rip arrayed his army outside the town on a stretch of flat ground beside a hill called Tangeumdae and the Han River. This was supposedly to take advantage of their cavalry and to force his men to fight to the death.[1]
Battle
Konishi Yukinaga's First Division arrived at Chungju on 6 May and separated into two groups. They fanned out in an arc to face Sin Rip's army.[2]
The Japanese force was arrayed with 10,000 men in the center under Konishi Yukinaga and Matsuura Shigenobu, 5,000 to the left under Sō Yoshitoshi, and 3,700 to the right under Arima Harunobu, Omura Yoshiaki, and Goto Sumiharu. They rushed forward, shooting and advancing. The Korean infantry broke. Sin Rip led a failed cavalry charge which was stopped by gunfire before they were able to break Japanese lines. The fleeing Korean soldiers were run down.[2]
Aftermath
Sin Rip fled and soon after committed suicide by drowning himself.[2]
Japanese First and Second Divisions advanced towards Hanseong.[2]
