Bayside Shopping Centre is a super regional shopping centre[4] located in Frankston CBD, approximately 40 km south of Melbourne, Victoria. It is the largest shopping centre on the Mornington Peninsula.[1] The centre features up to 260 retailers including: Myer, Target, Kmart, Coles and a Woolworths.[5]
History
Bayside shopping centre, which was formally known as Frankston Town Centre, originally consisted of three shopping centres: Bayside, Balmoral and Quayside. The Bayside part of the shopping centre opened in 1972 with 52 specialty stores, including a Myer Department store and a Ritchies Supermarket. Balmoral Shopping centre opened a year later with 19 stores. Quayside finally opened in 1991 with 72 specialty stores, a Coles Supermarket and a Target Discount Department store.[6]
The centre has remained the largest shopping centre on the Mornington Peninsula, due to large redevelopments. Bayside Shopping Centre's main local rivals are Centro Karingal and Frankston Power Centre, both located less than 5 kilometres from the centre.
Redevelopments
Since 1999, almost $200 million has gone into renovating the centre.[7]
2004 Redevelopment
In 2004 the Bayside Shopping Centre major redevelopment had commenced with a $63-million extension, that included a new 3 level building across Beach Street linked by a multi-level pedestrian bridge. The 3 level building was built on a block of land, adjacent to Beach Street, opposite Myer where a multi-storey carpark used to exist. The new building comprises up to 55 stores on the middle level (level 1) including a Woolworths supermarket and Kmart discount department store, as well as an additional 1,800 car spaces. A small bridge connects the two centres together. The extension was completed in March 2006.[8] Along with this, an entertainment complex was established, separate from the centre itself on Wells Road, at the end of the Shannon Mall. The entertainment complex includes, Australian Multiplex Cinemas (now Hoyts) and Strike Bowling.
2010-11 Redevelopment
Construction commenced in November 2010 on a new redevelopment that is to include nearly 40 new fashion stores as well as an expanded food court and a Woolworths and Aldi fresh food zone. The project is to cost $35-million and it is expected to be completed by mid to late 2011.[2][9] The redevelopment also aims to modernise the centre by replacing escalators, repainting, putting in new mall tiles, reconfiguring tenancies and refurbishing restroom facilities.[10][11] The entire level 1 (on the Myer side of Beach Street) will be dedicated towards fashion, with signature brands being located around Myer.[2]
In February 2011, during demolition works, a hoarding fell on a woman, injuring her grandson. WorkSafe Victoria investigated construction at the centre as a result.[12] The escalators outside the Myer store, have been removed and replaced with new ones which face the department store and have been rotated 90 degrees.[12] The renovations on level 2 of the centre were completed in June 2011, with the opening of a new JB Hi-Fi store, as well as an extension to the food court that includes several new food outlets and a large window overlooking Port Phillip Bay.
