He was a younger son of Sir Benjamin Bathurst, MP and educated at Eton College and Trinity College, Oxford.

He was a Member of Parliament (MP) for Cirencester 1713–1727, Gloucester 16 February 1728 – 1754 and Monmouth Boroughs 1754 – 5 November 1767.[2]

He married twice: firstly Finetta, the daughter of Henry Poole of Kemble, Gloucestershire, with whom he had 22 children and secondly Catherine, the daughter of the Rev. Lawrence Brodrick, chaplain to the House of Commons and widow of Dr. William Whitfield, with whom he had a further 14 children.
