Billie Eilish Pirate Baird O'Connell[2] (/ˈaɪliʃ/, born December 18, 2001[3]) is an American singer and songwriter. Her debut single, "Ocean Eyes", went viral and has accumulated over 215 million streams on Spotify as of February 2019[update]. Her debut EP Don't Smile at Me was released in August 2017. The EP went on to become certified Gold by the RIAA, with 5 of the songs also being RIAA-certified (four Gold, one Platinum). Following the EP's success, Apple Music named Eilish as its newest Up Next artist a month later in September 2017.[4] Her debut studio album When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go? will be released in March 2019.
Early life
Eilish was raised in Highland Park, Los Angeles by a family of actors and musicians.[5][3][6][7] Her parents are actress-musician-screenwriter Maggie Baird and Patrick O'Connell;[8][9][10] she has mainly Irish and Scottish ancestry.[11] She was homeschooled, and joined the Los Angeles Children's Chorus at age eight. At age 11, Eilish began writing and singing her own songs, taking after her older brother Finneas O'Connell who was already writing, performing and producing his own songs with his band.[12]
Career
2015–2017: Don't Smile at Me
In October 2015, Eilish recorded the song "Ocean Eyes", initially written by Finneas for his band, and sent it to her dance teacher who helped to choreograph a dance to it.[12][13]
"Ocean Eyes" was released as Eilish's debut single on SoundCloud in 2016. A music video was released on March 24, 2016, and a video of Eilish performing a dance to the song was released on November 22, 2016. That year, Eilish also released the single "Six Feet Under."[12] "Ocean Eyes" was rereleased worldwide through Darkroom and Interscope Records on November 18, 2016, to mainly positive critical reviews. "The song is pure pop; a ballad about longing for reconciliation with an ex. I can imagine it becoming a major hit," said Chris DeVille of Stereogum. On January 14, 2017, Eilish released an EP with four remixes of "Ocean Eyes".
Following the success of the "Ocean Eyes" remixes, Eilish released the single "Bellyache" on February 24, 2017.[14] "Bellyache" was produced and co-written by Finneas O'Connell, with a music video directed by Miles and AJ being released on March 22, 2017. On March 30, Eilish released the track "Bored" as part of the soundtrack to the Netflix series 13 Reasons Why.[15] On June 30, 2017, Eilish released the single "Watch"[16] with a follow-up single, "Copycat" released on July 11, 2017, along with the announcement of her debut EP, Don't Smile at Me. Each Friday in July, Eilish would add another single to the EP. It was in this manner that the singles "Idontwannabeyouanymore" and "My Boy" were released.[17] Don't Smile at Me was released on August 11, 2017.[18] After the release, Eilish collaborated with American rapper Vince Staples for a remix of "Watch" titled "&Burn", which was later included on a re-release of the EP.
2018–present: When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go?
In February 2018, Eilish embarked on the Where's My Mind Tour, which concluded in April 2018.[19] For the Record Store Day of 2018, Eilish announced a 7" vinyl featuring an acoustic version of her song "Party Favor" and an acoustic cover of Drake's "Hotline Bling".[citation needed] Eilish collaborated with American singer Khalid for the single "Lovely", which was released in April 2018 and added to the soundtrack for the second season of 13 Reasons Why.[20] She also released the singles "Bitches Broken Hearts" and "You Should See Me in a Crown".[21] On October 17, 2018, Eilish released the single "When the Party's Over".[22] On January 30, 2019, Eilish released the third single from her upcoming album When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go?, "Bury a Friend".[23][24]
Personal life
On November 27, 2018, after videos emerged online of a compilation featuring Eilish experiencing tics related to Tourette syndrome, she posted on her Instagram account confirming Tourette syndrome was a part of her life.[25][26]
Eilish's main musical influences are the Beatles, Green Day and Avril Lavigne.[27]
