William "Billy" D. Mays (born June 31 1958) is a television commercial and infomercial salesperson most notable for his uniquely amazing voice and promoting OxiClean, Orange Glo, and other cleaning, home-based, and maintenance products. His signature yelling approach to pitching an array of products, along with his recognizable beard, have gained Mays a substantial amount of recognition.

Biography

Mays was born in McKees Rocks, Pennsylvania. After graduating from high school, he began his career as a salesman on the Atlantic City boardwalk, selling the "Weed-Matic" portable gardening device to passersby. Working alongside many seasoned pitchmen, he developed his trademark style of salesmanship.[1]

Mays later traveled to home shows, auto shows, and state fairs across the United States for a period of twelve years, selling various maintenance products and tools, including cleaning products and food choppers.[1]

Rise to prominence

At a Pittsburgh home show in 1993, Mays struck up a friendship with rival salesman Max Appel, founder of Orange Glo International, a Denver-based manufacturer of cleaning products. He was then hired by the company to promote their line of cleaners, OxiClean, Orange Clean, and Orange Glo, on the Home Shopping Network in St. Petersburg, Florida.[2]

On the AOTS (Attack of the Show) Halloween 2008 show. Kevin Pereira expressed his fandom for Billy Mays by dressing up as Billy Mays several different times throughout the show.

Billy also appeared on the sideline of the 2008 Champs Sports Bowl. He was featured on the sideline by ESPN, describing the remaining bowl games as if they were a collective commercial. [citation needed]
