This category is intended for articles about dead people (or people in Category:Possibly living people) whose historically recent year of birth is indicated, but the month and day are missing because of lack of research, notation in the relevant article, or availability in a reliable source.

• For living people whose month and day of birth are unavailable, please use Category:Date of birth missing (living people). User:Yobot runs though articles in Category:Year of birth missing and, if Category:Living people exists, replaces the first category with Category:Year of birth missing (living people).
• For people whose period of activity occurred before 1850 and whose year of birth is likely to be the only specific indicator known to history, use Category:Date of birth unknown.
• If the month, day and year are unavailable, please use Category:Year of birth missing (in the case of people active before the second half of the nineteenth century, Category:Year of birth unknown is applicable).

This is a unique category and is intended to be mutually exclusive with Category:Date of birth missing (living people), Category:Date of birth unknown, Category:Year of birth missing, and Category:Year of birth unknown.
