categorization under Gliding or Unpowered flight[edit]

See the discussion at Wikipedia Talk:WikiProject Gliding#Gliding. In that discussion we have determined that there is an issue of different understanding of the term gliding between the US and UK. In the US, gliding is any unpowered winged flight, while soaring is the sport of flying sailplanes. In the UK, gliding is the term for the sport of flying gliders. Since gliding is an acceptable synonym for soaring in the US, the emerging consensus so far is to reserve Category:Gliding for the sport. In order to facilitate that, I created Category:Unpowered flight to take in unpowered forms of aviation and this category. If there are at least 3 articles or categories that would fit in it, a subcategory of Category:unpowered winged flight could be created where this category would fit. Please help us reach a consensus everyone can live with. Ikluft (talk) 21:10, 12 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Category:Unpowered aviation[edit]

Maybe, when this category was called Category:In-flight airliner loss of all engines, it might have made sense to put it in Category:Unpowered aviation, implying the possibility that a plane with failed engine(s) could glide to the ground unpowered. But, now the category may include catastrophic engine failure that takes out a wing or otherwise makes a plane uncontrollable. Wbm1058 (talk) 20:08, 31 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Should the title for this category be changed?[edit]

The category stated that it "lists multi-engine passenger airline accidents involving loss of all engines in flight and subsequent gliding flight." However, a lot of the incidents listed here did not result in the loss of all engine. The title of this category is not specific enough that some of the incidents listed here, which does not meet the requirement from the quote, are acceptable in this category. So should this category be renamed so that it would be clearer what the category is supposed to be listing down, or should there a creation of another category that can be created which will meet the requirement of the quote aforementioned and leave this category as it is? Or maybe the text in the category should be removed? Planeandcarguy (talk) 06:44, 29 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
