Category scope

[edit]

Do we need to expand the scope of this category slightly to include those airfields established under the RFC, RNAS, Fleet Air Arm or Army Air Service that subsequently became civil airports? This revert by MilborneOne at the Biggin Hill Airport article is the reason for asking. Does this category include foreign airfields with British military origins? Does the category only include active airfields, or are defunct ones included. Seems to me there are many defunct airfields that started off as military and subsequently became civil. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Mjroots (talkcontribs)

I don't see any added value in this category at all, for me it may as well be removed entirely. I must admit though, that there are few categories that I do see any added value in, anyway. Jan olieslagers (talk) 16:25, 30 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I tend to agree with User:Jan olieslagers, does this really serve a purpose? - Ahunt (talk) 21:40, 30 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
if airports have a history section it’s because their histories interest readers. It is quite surprising how far afield airports in use today go back in their origins to the RAF. From the the Faroe islands to Bombay to Reykjavik, and much further afield. The RAF, too, has an extensive history page. There is nothing at all wrong with letting readers interested by aviation history and world history have a category where they can appreciate the breadth of the RAF’s former operations. Any mentally healthy person probably finds 95% of the articles on Wikipedia uninteresting, so the fact you don’t think this category is interesting fails to persuade me that it shouldn’t be a category. There is the category of RAF airfields in Britain during the second war, so why should there not be a category of airports with RAF origins the world over?Alterrabe (talk) 23:11, 30 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Not sure the category has any encyclopedic value, a lot of airfields in the UK pre-date the RAF, if this is part of a category tree then we also need "Civilian airports with US Army/USAF/French Air Force/+100 others as not show a Anglo-centric view. Recently removed the category from RAF Mount Pleasant as it appears to have been added with little knowledge of the aerodrome. (Also removed it from Heathrow which started as a civil aerodrome and also Lajes Airport. Perhaps time to consider raising a deletion discussion. MilborneOne (talk) 17:35, 1 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
