How to License

[edit]

Hi, I know many of the Iowa Legislators have photos available on their http://www.legis.state.ia.us website, but I don't know what kind of license I need to use these photos. I beleive that they are under Fair Use or the Public Domain, but I need to attach a license when I submit them to the Wikimedia Commons. Kshannon 14:45, 18 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

<smartguy9523> Wikipedia-en, I have a question about photo licensing and uploading <Shanel> smartguy9523: Ask away. :) <smartguy9523> Thanks, The Wikiproject Iowa would like to add some photos of politiicians <smartguy9523> politicians <smartguy9523> Photos exist of these people on the official Iowa Legislature website <smartguy9523> may I upload these with some kind of public domain license? <Shanel> smartguy9523: Those should preferrably be uploaded to Wikimedia Commons, if they are public domain. :) <smartguy9523> I think they are, but I don't know what license they are on the legislature website with, but is it easy to upload them and add a license? <centrx> Many states do not release their documents into the public domain <smartguy9523> ok, I will check with the state webmaster or someone and see if I can use these photos. <smartguy9523> Thank you both for your help

I have sent an e-mail to webmaster at legis dot state dot ia dot us asking permission to use pictures from their website. Will follow up and look here for advice and suggestions. Kshannon 06:08, 27 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]
