Chiara Appendino (born June 12, 1984) is an Italian politician who is the 20th and current mayor of Turin.[1][2] A member of the Five Star Movement, she was elected on June 20, 2016.

Biography

Appendino was born in Moncalieri on June 12, 1984. She attended grammar school at Vincenzo Gioberti Turin and graduated in International Economics and Management with honors with a thesis on the marketing strategies of entry into the Chinese market after majoring in economics and finance at Bocconi University in Milan.

From September 2007 to January 2010 she worked as controller for Juventus; from 1 January 2010 has worked in administration, finance and control in her husband's business. She has been married since 2010 to the Turin entrepreneur Marco Lavatelli, with whom has one daughter, Sara, who was born on January 19, 2016 at the Mauritian hospital of Turin.

Political career

Chiara Appendino approached the world of being interested in political Left Ecology Freedom. In 2012 she joined the nascent Five Star Movement.

At the 2011 Turin local elections she was elected municipal councilor for the 5 Star Movement collecting 623 preferences.

On November 8, 2015 she officially announced her candidacy for mayor of Turin for the 2016 local elections. In the first round she had gotten 30,92% of the vote by going to the ballot. On June 19, 2016 she was officially elected Mayor of Turin picking up in the second round of administrative with 54,56% of the vote, defeating incumbent mayor Piero Fassino (45.44% of the votes).
