Chithara is a village in Kollam district in the state of Kerala, India.[1]

Demographics

As of 2001 India census,Chithara had a population of 20694 with 9727 males and 10967 females.[1]

Administration

Chithara town is in Mancodu villages. This village has the credit of having elected the first woman Panchayat President in India. Her name was Mrs. Sumathi Sukumaran.

Education

According to the Literacy Survey conducted as part of the Total Literacy Campaign in 1989, this Panchayat had the largest number of illiterate people in Kollam district. However, as years passed, there has been considerable development in the field of education. Initially, this village had only a Lower Primary and Upper Primary School , both managed by the Government. Later, the SN Trust started a high School at Thumpamaonthodi. Another lower primary school, Al Mina also functioned here.
