Darko Perić (born 25 March 1977) is a Serbian actor. He has gained worldwide fame for playing the role of "Helsinki" in the Spanish series Money Heist (native title "La Casa de Papel").[1][2]

Early life

Born to a Serbian family in Kladovo, a small frontier city in Serbia, Darko showed interest in the Arts scene from a very young age. His first time on the stage was when a Cuban singer invited him on stage to sing Guantanamera. For a 6-year boy from Yugoslavia this was an extraordinary first experience that changed his life. From that moment he performed in every play in school.

In 1991, at the start of the Yugoslav Wars, his dreams of going to animation school in Zagreb were halted. His parents decided that a new path was to be set for their son; he was to become a doctor. Darko was then sent to veterinary school in Bucharest where he rediscoved his passion for the cinema and theatre in Bucharest thanks to his student friends at the Romanian Film Academy. During that time he combined the study of medicine with his passion for film making acting in a variety of student short films.

In 1994 he moved to the west of Romania, in Timișoara, where he continued his studies of medicine and also the world of live theatre. After 6 years of living in the multicultural Romanian city, he finished his studies and graduated in Veterinary Medicine with honours. While in Timișoara he also became involved in the local Hardcore and Punk scene, singing in bands and organizing events in the local cultural centre where he met many international artists. Hungry to learn and always excited to meet and work with new people this inspired Darko to move to Berlin. While in Berlin, he discovered an amazing world of underground squats and performance art. He continued to shoot short movies and act in many diverse projects. Not surprisingly during this time, he connected with lots of influential people from around the world.

Career

In 2004 he moved to Barcelona, a city which gave him the opportunity to continue his work in film. Darko was quickly cast in a variety of different parts that include roles on the local TV3 where he was cast in his first major job in the Spanish series “Crematorio” for Canal + in 2010. After this, he continues working in Madrid in different productions, from different series' to feature films. In 2015 he performed in A Perfect Day directed by Fernando León de Aranoa with Benicio del Toro, Tim Robbins and Olga Kurylenko.

In 2016 he was cast In the Spanish series Atresmedia “Mar de plástico” where he played the role of “Oso”, a Ukrainian gangster and main villain in the series. This role shifted his career and gave him greater visibility in the Spanish film industry.

Darko Perić was cast in 2017 to interpret the role of Helsinki in the series natively titled "La Casa de Papel" or Money Heist as it's known to English speaking audiences. Created by Álex Pina, the series was originally produced by Atresmedia until 2016 when Netflix acquired the rights to stream the series and distributed through their streaming service worldwide. Money Heist has become the most successful Netflix production and in 2018 the Spanish series won in the category Best Drama at the 46th annual international Emmy Award.

In summer 2019 Darko started shooting Season 3 of Money Heist.
