Deltaherpeton is an extinct genus of colosteid from middle Mississippian (late Viséan age) deposits of Delta, Iowa, United States.[1] It was first named by John R. Bolt and R. Eric Lombard in 2010 and the type species is Deltaherpeton hiemstrae.[1]
Deltaherpeton is unique among colosteids in bearing internasal and single midline postparietal with the possibility of midline pair of cf. "interfrontonasals". This discovery prompted review and augmentation of defining characters for family Colosteidae, with no further clarification of relationship of colosteids to other early tetrapods.
Though it is believed that Deltaherpeton is more derived, the species is thought to have shared a habitat with other primitive amphibians such as Whatcheeria deltae and Siguornea multidentata approximately 339.4 to 336 Ma, [2]
