Emmanuel Shahid was born and raised into the Nation of Islam. Through the separation of his parents during his early childhood - over the years his mother stop practicing Islam, and his father over the years became an Imam (teacher) in AL-Islam.


In 1994 Emmanuel traveled to Israel and became moved after spending time within the African Hebrew Israelite Community in Dimona, Israel, and witnessing their Hebrew lifestyle and understanding the scriptures in Hebrew.

In 1996 Emmanuel and his wife Elianah started the journey of conversion to Judaism under a long process by Rabbi Daniel Grossman of Adath Israel Conservative Congregation in Lawrenceville, NJ. The conversion process ended in 1998 and Emmanuel had completed his conversion after answering a series of questions before a “bet din” a religious court panel of Jewish Rabbi’s. Rabbi - Daniel Grossman of Adath Israel Congregation, Rabbi Eric Wisnia and Cantor Stuart Binder of Temple Beth Chaim in West Windsor NJ. Emmanuel had partaking in the ritual bath (mikvah), prayers, a symbolic circumcision drop of blood being drawn.

Emmanuel and Elianah in 1998 proudly - legally changed their names respectively from Shahid Samad Watson to Emmanuel Shahid S. Watson benAvraham, and Constance Marie Watson to Elianah Constance Marie Watson - Avraham.

Emmanuel has been married to Elianah “Connie” for 32 years and father of 8 children (7 sons and 1 daughter).

In 1982 Emmanuel married Colleen G. Gray and divorced in 1986 no children.

In 1988 he married Patricia Richardson and one son Shahid Watson 3rd - divorced Patricia in 1990.

On January 1st, 1991 married Constance Marie Johnson (Elianah Constance Marie Watson-Avraham) had 3 sons together Elijah, Eleazar, Elyakeem. Elianah had a son prior to marriage to Emmanuel - his name is Christian Mark Johnson-Williams (Nasik).

During Emmanuel”s marriage to Elianah he was apart of Hebrew Israelite Community and practiced “polygamy” and took on another wife Tamasha Willingham (2000) and had 3 additional children Kadmiel, Eliad and Elianah Tamasha. The union together with Ms. Willingham ceased to exist in 2009. Emmanuel won full custody of 3 children in 2012.

Emmanuel and Queen Elianah “Connie” endured many challenges throughout their marriage and still remain happily married. In 2024 celebrated 33 years of marriage.

Emmanuel and Elianah presently in 2024 have 3 grandsons Yosiah Emmanuel, Iatu Kyrie, Ashrael Yakir, and one granddaughter Brooklyn Aryah.

His “Community Organizing” affiliations include:

Lifetime membership with the Newark Branch of the NAACP, past President of the Essex Youth Coalition; 1982 member of the New Jersey Leadership Institution, and a lifetime member of the Newark Branch of the Urban League.

Mr. Avraham was a founding Member of the Black Heritage Day Parade (1977), the Vice President of the Black Heritage Day Parade Committee (1984-1986), a former member of the Essex Youth Togetherness Festival, and a former chairperson of 100 Young Black Business Persons (1986-1988).

As a member of the Urban League of Metropolitan Trenton, New Jersey, he organized the "Crack Down Marathon March" against drugs (1989). Over 14 thousand residents came out to support and marched. He was also an active member of Young People for Progress.

Mr. Avraham received national attention from former drug czar Williams Bennett and Deputy Drug czar Judge Reginald Walton. He was recognized by the U.S. Housing and the Urban Development Secretary Jack Kemp. He organized and won the support of six Federal Agencies to select Trenton as a Pilot Demonstration Project. Because of these efforts lead by Emmanuel a resident of the City of Trenton – Trenton New Jersey was selected to be one of the First Cities in America for the “Weed and Seed” Program. (1991)

Mr. Avraham has successfully led the effort to change major Newark (formerly known as High Street 1983) and Trenton (formerly known as Princeton Avenue 1989), NJ street names to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard.

He was the founder and chairman of the Grassroots Movement Incorporated. He organized Anti-Drug Camp-outs in 1989 in several drug infested neighborhoods. Rev. Al Sharpton and Mr. Avraham supported each other’s Community Activism in New Jersey and New York during the late 80’s and early 90’s addressing social justice issues together. New Jersey news media called them “two peas in a pod” on the frontline fighting against police brutality.

One of Mr. Avraham's fondest achievements was in 1998 when former New Jersey Governor Christie Todd Whitman appointed him to serve on The New Jersey Commission for Israel.

Emmanuel Avraham has maintained being a registered Independent Voter since 1988.
