Beatrice Chien (1940 — 6 July 2021) was a Singaporean nurse and actress, best known for her roles in Crazy Rich Asians and Ramen Teh.
Early life and career[edit]
Chien was born in 1940 as the fourth child of a Chinese musician and his wife. Her father gave Chien away as an infant to a childless singer who had left her husband, in order to settle a $100 gambling debt. She grew up in Tanjong Pagar with her adoptive grandmother and attended Yangzheng Primary School in the morning and Fairfield Methodist Primary School in the afternoon. Her adoptive mother would take Chien along to operas she sang or acted in.[1]

Chien married a mechanic at age 22, with whom she had three children. He left them when she was in her 40s.[1][7]
