Ffumbe Clan is one of the many clans in the Buganda Kingdom, and also one of the clans the Baganda people belong to. Everyone in the Buganda Kindgom has a clan they belong to each having a totem. Ffumbe is a Luganda word meaning an animal called African Civet. It is also one of the oldest clans in Buganda as it was among the few that Kintu found when he arrived in Buganda. The grandfather of the clan is believed to be the 33rd King of the Tonda Dynasty. The grand father of the clan was called Buganda-Ntege Nalusiri Walusimbi and is considered to be a very important personality because it is believed that after him, the land of Muwawa came to be called Buganda.[1]
History[edit]
The Ffumbe Clan is said to have started with Walusimbi who had a huge banana plantation that was harrassed by the Civet as it ate every banana that ripened including the ones for making wine. Walusimbi tried all ways of capturing and killing it but was unsuccessful because it survived every trap he set. As a result of this, he decided to declare that the African Civet was an abomination in his house because of the loss and distress it caused him. All his children and their descendants were to respect it for having very clever ways and with time, it became the clan totem.[1]
