Gonçalo Lobo Pinheiro (born April 4,1979)[1] is a Portuguese photojournalist and documentary photographer,[2] living in Macau, China, since 2010.[3]
Winner of several awards throughout his career[4][5][6][7][8], Pinheiro also held several exhibitions, both in his own name and in collectives.[9][10][11][12][13] Special highlight for first place, series category, in the 2023 edition of Paraty em Foco - International Photography Festival, in Brazil, and for being, also in 2023, one of the winners of the 8th edition of the initiative's Open Call Poster Mostra, in Lisbon, Portugal.[14]
Education
[edit]He attended and completed secondary education at Escola Secundária Gil Vicente. After four years studying Geological Engineering at the Faculty of Science and Technology of Universidade Nova de Lisboa in Almada, which he entered in 1997, he concluded that his interests lay elsewhere and enrolled in a degree in Communication Sciences, Journalism variant, at Autonomous University of Lisbon, a course he completed in 2005. He also has a master's degree in Documentary Photography from LABASAD - Escola Superior de Artes e Design de Barcelona.[15]
Work
[edit]He began working with photography in 2000 and, two years later, began his professional internship at the now extinct news agency Intermeios. For six years he was part of the team of photographers at the newspaper A Bola as a collaborator. From its foundation until August 2010, he was part of the team of photographers at the newspaper I. He collaborated or published his photos in several Portuguese and international titles, including Público, Correio da Manhã, Diário de Notícias, Expresso, The Guardian, BBC or The Washington Post, among others.[16]
Between 2004 and 2010 he was, in Portugal, official photographer for Brazilian singer Daniela Mercury.[17]
Arriving in Macau, he joined the newspaper Hoje Macau, where he served as writer, photojournalist and editor between 2010 and 2014. He was photography coordinator for the magazine Macau, Portuguese version, between 2011 and 2021. He was also, between 2018 and 2021, a journalist multimedia and editor at Plataforma Media[18] a project of the Global Media group. Between 2021 and mid-2023, he was part of the editorial staff of the newspaper Ponto Final[19] as a photojournalist and editor. Since November 2022 he has collaborated with Lusa News Agency, and his work is also disseminated by European Pressphoto Agency.[20]
Since 2018, he has been one of the official photographers of the International Volleyball Federation (FIVB). He is one of the founding members of Halftone - Macau Photographic Association.[21]
In 2021, Pinheiro teamed up with the Chinese skateboard brand Maven and Macau-based skateboard store Exit to make a line of three skateboards and apparel dedicated to Macau.[22]
In 2022, he represented Macau in the ninth edition of the iNstantes – Avintes International Photography Festival in Portugal, with the black-and-white series Perto de mim, made in 2021.[23]
Throughout his professional career, he has used his photographic work to support various charitable projects and NGOs, particularly social and human rights causes. She joined the Italian collective Perimetro in the "United Photographers for Ukraine" and "Prints for Gaza" solidarity initiatives.[24][25][26]
He is represented, in Brazil, by Icon Artes Galeria and, in Macau, by Galeria Amagao. His photography is part of the contemporary collection of MA-g - The Museum of Avant-garde[27] which will open its doors in Switzerland in 2025. His books are available in several collections and libraries around the world, including the National Library of Portugal, the Library of Congress of the United States, the National Library of France, the National Library of Germany, the Central Library of Macau, the Gulbenkian Art Library, the Serralves Foundation Library, the Tim Hetherington Photobook Library of the Bronx Documentary Center, in New York, The Photographers' Gallery, in London, or the Narrativa library, in Lisbon, but also in several universities and in several locations in the National Network of Public Libraries.[28][29]
