Grant-Leon Ranos (Armenian: Հրանտ-Լեոն Ռանոս; born 20 July 2003) is a professional footballer who plays as a forward for Bundesliga club Borussia Mönchengladbach. Born in Germany, Ranos represents the Armenia national team internationally.[1]

Personal life

[edit]

Ranos was born in Gehrden, Germany. His father is from Armenia.[2] Several Armenia media outlets have reported that his original last name is Yeranosyan.[3]

Club career

[edit]

As a youth player, Ranos joined the youth academy of Borussia Dortmund, moving from the youth academy of Hannover 96.[4] After that, he joined the Bayern Munich under–19 team.[5] In 2022, he was promoted to Bayern Munich II where he became a regular starter. [6]

On 24 May 2023, he signed a four-year contract with Bundesliga club Borussia Mönchengladbach that will run until 2027, set to join on a free transfer on 1 July 2023.[7]

International career

[edit]

Despite being born in Germany, in 2023 Ranos acquired Armenian citizenship and chose to represent Armenia internationally.[8] In March of the same year, he received his first call-up to the Armenian senior national team for a UEFA Euro 2024 qualifying match against Turkey and a friendly match against Cyprus, respectively.[9]

He then won his first cap for Armenia by starting the latter game, on 28 March 2023 in the process, Ranos also scored his first two international goals, as the friendly eventually ended in a 2–2 draw.[10] Ranos' first competitive start was a UEFA Euro 2024 qualifying match versus Wales on 16 June 2023. Ranos scored two goals to help Armenia to a 4–2 victory.[11]
