Hafid Abdelmoula (Arabic: حفيظ عبد المولى; born 1975) is a Moroccan-American filmmaker, author, screenwriter, actor, singer, and producer. He is best known for his work on Broken Gaiete, Captain Fantastic, The Wall in the Garden, and Arto.[1][2]
Biography
[edit]Hafid Abdelmoula is a Moroccan-American polymath whose creative talents span the realms of writing, directing, producing, acting, and singing. Recognized for his ability to seamlessly bridge cultural and geographical divides, Abdelmoula’s storytelling captivates audiences worldwide. Fluent in multiple languages, including Arabic, French, English, and Berber, he draws from his rich ethnic background and diverse experiences to craft narratives that resonate deeply with people from all walks of life.
Abdelmoula’s journey into filmmaking began in his twenties while studying English Literature at Ibn Zohr University in Agadir, Morocco. Later, he pursued further education in the USA at New Mexico State University, where he earned a Bachelor’s in Film, and at Vermont College of Fine Arts, where he obtained an MFA in Directing. He also occasionally gives lectures, sharing his expertise with aspiring filmmakers.[3][4] [5] His thesis film, *Broken Gaiete*, marked a significant milestone in his career, earning the Best Feature Film award at Santa Fe Film Festival and securing the El Paso Filmmaker Award for Best Director. This achievement was just the beginning of a series of accolades, with his work garnering 15 nominations and 5 wins at prestigious film festivals, including the Madrid International Film Festival and the World Music & Independent Film Festival. The film is now called VILLAGE.
His acclaimed portfolio includes the psychological thriller *Baby*, awarded at the New Mexico Student Filmmakers Showcase, and the evocative *The Wall in the Garden*. His multifaceted talent also earned him the title of "Rising Star" by the New Mexico Film and Television Hall of Fame in 2023.[6]
In addition to his celebrated past works, Abdelmoula is actively developing several exciting projects. These include *Broken Gaiete II - Aevium*, a sequel to his award-winning film, the intense drama *Invisible Shackles*, the Moroccan historical epic *Allal The Painter*, and a comedy mini-series titled *Not Again*. His latest short film, *Arto*, is now showing in festivals.[7]
Abdelmoula’s creative journey transcends boundaries, both in his art and in his life. Beyond filmmaking, he has also written two published novels and co-authored a how-to book with Trudel Abdelmoula. His work, whether on-screen or in print, continues to reflect the rich tapestry of his heritage while resonating with audiences on a global, community, and personal level.[8]
