The International Conference on Biomedical Ontology (ICBO)[1] is a yearly international academic conference on the topic of applied ontology development and innovation in biomedicine and related fields. The goal of the conference is to "foster discussion and innovation in ontology-driven research and development in the areas of biology, medicine, diseases, human health, genome biology, nutrition, food, environment, biomes, plants, agriculture".[1]

Background

[edit]

ICBO was founded in 2009 by Barry Smith, Olivier Bodenreider and Maryann E. Martone.[2] The inaugural conference was hosted at the University of Buffalo in Buffalo, New York[3][4] and was organized by Barry Smith and Suzanna Lewis. Annual ICBO conferences are organized on the basis of input from the steering committee, which is comprised of scholars from across the globe.[2][5]

Structure and Partnerships

[edit]

ICBO conferences feature a mix of workshops, poster sessions, presentations of academic research, and keynote addresses.[6] Research accepted for presentation at ICBO conferences is published in associated publicly available proceedings by CEUR Workshop Proceedings.[7]

Since 2021,[8] ICBO has partnered with the Journal of Biomedical Semantics to publish high-quality journal-length articles accepted for presentation at the conference. ICBO 2022 was hosted jointly by the University of Michigan, the Chinese Conference on Biomedical Ontology and Terminology[9] and the 4th annual U.S. Semantic Technologies Symposium.[10]

Content

[edit]

Topics covered primarily focus on applied ontology strategies for addressing issues in biomedicine arising from big-data interoperability[11], ontology development and maintenance[12][13], knowledge graph and ontology integration into machine learning and natural language processing pipelines, and ontology-driven applications to research on, for example, infectious diseases, genetics, cell biology[14], vital signs measurement[15], and social determinants of health.[16][17][18][19][20]
