Draft:January 6 United States Capitol attack conspiracy theories

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Conspiracy theories about the January 6 United States Capitol attack commonly allege that the demonstrations were largely peaceful and misrepresented, and/or that they were instigated or helped along by Capitol Police and other government officials. These views are generally not supported by the public.

A December 2023 poll by The Washington Post and University of Maryland found that about 25% of U.S. adults believed or suspected that the Federal Bureau of Investigation organized and encouraged the insurrection, including 34% of Republicans, 30% of independents, and 11% of Democrats.[1]

In 2023, Speaker of the House Mike Johnson released around 90 hours of security footage from the date of the insurrection. Footage of a mass of people peacefully walking in through the front door, people seemingly being escorted through the building by Capitol Police, and similar events are often emphasized by pro–January 6 people and organizations.[citation needed]
