John J. Flynn (born May 24, 1966) is an American lawyer who is serving his second term as the District Attorney of Erie County, New York.

Background[edit]

Flynn was born in East Aurora, New York. He graduated from East Aurora High School in 1984. After obtaining his undergraduate degree in Political Science from Bowling Green State University, Flynn joined the United States Navy.[1]

Military Career[edit]

Flynn attended Officer Candidate School at Naval Station Newport in Newport, Rhode Island and the Navy Supply Corps School in Athens, Georgia. He was then assigned to the USS CLEVELAND (LPD-7).[2]

Flynn left active duty in 2001.[3] He served in the Naval Reserves until his retirement in 2017.[3] During his military career, Flynn, who reached the rank of Commander, received a Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal and six Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medals.[1]

Legal Career[edit]

After Flynn graduated from University at Buffalo Law School in 1995, he served as a United States Navy Judge Advocate General's Corps attorney at the Pensacola Naval Air Station. He was appointed as a Special Assistant United States Attorney.[1]

Flynn joined at the Erie County District Attorney's Office as an Assistant District Attorney. In 2002, he became a personal injury attorney.[1]

Flynn was a lecturer in the Political Science department at Buffalo State University where he taught a Moot Court class.[1]

Political Career[edit]

Town of Tonawanda[edit]

Flynn was elected to the Town of Tonawanda town board in 2003. Flynn was appointed as a Town of Tonawanda town justice in December 2006. The following year, he won the election for town justice.[4]

Flynn served as town justice until August 2010 when he was appointed as Tonawanda town attorney.[5]

Erie County District Attorney[edit]

In 2016, Flynn ran for District Attorney. He won the Democratic primary in September 2016.[6] Flynn won the general election in November 2016.[7] He was sworn into office on December 30, 2016.[8]

In 2020, Flynn, who was endorsed by the Erie County Democratic Party and the Erie County Republican Party, ran unopposed for re-election.[9]
